Arborist Consulting involves working as an advisor for property owners, contractors, city agencies, and others seeking guidance with tree preservation or advice on the best course of action for a particular situation. The work can range from writing a Tree Protection Plan for a development project to providing expert witness testimony in a legal case.
The consulting arborist works independently, delivering reports and recommendations for their clients. Some will perform work as well, such as pruning and planting. However, if they are performing work themselves it is important that they remain independent from their consulting services to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest.
A qualified Arborist consultant has the experience, knowledge and skills to provide the best service for their clients. They must have excellent communication and technical writing skills as well as a strong understanding of the principles of Arboriculture. They should also be proficient at reading maps and have familiarity with local government ordinances regarding tree removal, pruning and planting.
Some consulting arborists are ISA Certified Arborists, while others hold additional credentials. The credentials are no guarantee of quality, but they do help to differentiate professionals from those who may not be as experienced or knowledgeable.
For example, a Consulting Arborist who has earned the Registered Consulting Arborist (RCA) credential through the American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA) must have five or more years of industry experience and have documented report writing training and experience. They must also graduate from the ASCA Consulting Academy, pass a written exam and submit two consulting reports for review. To maintain the RCA credential, an individual must also receive 30 Continuing Education Units every two years.
Many cities and towns require that a Consulting Arborist be present during excavation or construction to ensure that proper safety precautions are being followed. This can be a great way to protect valuable existing trees on a development site and reduce the chance of damage.
The work can be challenging as it is not easy to tell if the soil conditions are right for root growth and the type of equipment being used. It requires a high level of skill and knowledge to assess the health of a tree, identify any risks and recommend corrective actions. It can also be very rewarding, especially after the project is complete and the existing trees are thriving.
